Textbooks:
Textbooks for our youth classes are published by Better Chinese, desi gned
for non-Mandarin speaking students, in traditional or simplified Chinese
characters and Hanyu pinyin, with focus on conversational Mandarin. All
four language skills: listening, speaking, reading,
and writing, are taught as well as selected Chinese culture topics.
Homework assigned by teachers may include written and recording
assignments. Teachers develop supplemental handouts to help enforce
teaching. Cost of textbooks, workbooks, and audio/video CD are in
addition to tuition and fee. Textbook for adult class will be selected
from popular publishers and is still being evaluated.
Program:
For the 2009-2010 school year, we plan to offer CSL Youth classes: P
(for young beginners) and CSL1 through CSL4. We are also collecting
interests in a Beginning Mandarin Adult class.
CSL Youth
Classes:
This is a multi-year program, designed specifically for students
at grades pre-K through 12th. Students enter the CSL Youth program base
on their ages and language proficiency.
No Mandarin
background is needed for students entering P (younger than 2nd grader)
and CSL1 (2nd grader or older). Assessment is required for students
entering CSL2 and above. Classes are expected to have students of mixed
ages, mostly with no or very limited Mandarin background. Class size may
vary depending
on registration (minimum 10). Instructions are given in English and
Mandarin, with increasing use of
Mandarin as time goes on.
CSL Adult
Classes:
We are collecting interests in a Beginning Mandarin Adult class. This
class will focus on developing communication skills using Mandarin and
in a culturally appropriate manner. This class is for adults. Hanyu
pinyin will be introduced. Minimum registration is 8.
